The Athena Pharmaceuticals laboratory continues to grow through the acquisition of Medipha Santé, a company specialising in pharmaceutical operations, regulatory affairs, and pharmacovigilance. Experts at AURIS Finance, a consultancy specialising in mergers and acquisitions, assess this latest market move.
The acquisition of Medipha Santé is a highly strategic move for Athena Pharmaceutiques.
A benchmark performer
It is acquiring a French company that has expertise in all the activities required for the operation of medicines in hospitals and outpatient clinics. Founded in 2004, Medipha Santé is now a leading player in the pharmaceutical market. The company offers regulatory, certification, distribution, pharmacovigilance and registration support services for medicines and medical devices. With a team of 35 people, Medipha Santé currently manages over 350 projects each year for the ANSM (French National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products) and other European agencies. The group supports around a hundred partners in operating and monitoring their medicines. Meanwhile, Athena Pharmaceutiques, which designs and manufactures drugs, is in an expansion phase. The laboratory has two industrial sites in France and India and intends to open a new site in 2026. Athena exports its pharmaceutical solutions to over 80 countries using patented technologies. It employs a total of 500 people.
One-stop shop
This operation will enable Athena Pharmaceutiques to offer its partners an ‘all-in-one’ solution covering everything from drug development to marketing. The combination creates an integrated platform designed to facilitate international laboratories’ access to the European market, drawing on industrial excellence and detailed local knowledge. ‘This acquisition will enable us to offer our international partners an integrated solution, from development to commercial launch in Europe. It is a powerful strategic lever for accelerating our growth’, said Alexandre Williams, Chairman of Athena Pharmaceutiques, on the occasion of the merger.
Greater consolidation
The French pharmaceutical sector is undergoing a process of consolidation, driven by the need for companies to increase their competitiveness, expand their range of products and services, and grow their international presence. This trend is driven by regulatory pressure and the need to fund significant investment in research and development. 2025 has seen major alliances and operations targeting specialist structures. According to a study by consultancy firm PwC, 86% of healthcare industry executives who have made a significant acquisition in the last three years plan to make one or more acquisitions in the next three years.
