Fifteen years of research, three financing rounds, and an implant unlike any other in the world. In May 2026, UroMems is reaching the most decisive milestone in its history: a 60 million dollar fundraising entirely backed by a leading US investor, which places the Grenoble-based medtech within reach of regulatory approval in the United States and Europe.
Analysis by the experts at Auris Finance, advisors in mergers, acquisitions and financial engineering.
UroMems has closed a 60 million dollar fundraising, fully financed by California-based Ajax Health Fund I, a fund specialised in medical technologies. This is the largest financing ever completed by the company since its creation in 2011.
The deal follows the 47 million dollar round closed in 2024, led by Crédit Mutuel Innovation with the participation of the European Innovation Council. In total, UroMems will have raised more than 160 million dollars since its founding, a level of capitalisation that reflects both the ambition of the project and the strength of investor conviction in the technology.
A technology with no equivalent on the market
UroActive is the first active electronic implantable artificial urinary sphincter, developed to compensate for sphincter deficiency in male and female patients suffering from stress urinary incontinence. The technology platform is protected by more than 180 granted patents. Where existing mechanical solutions require the patient to actively and manually operate the device, UroActive works automatically: the system is placed around the urethra and adjusts to the patient’s activity, with no manual operation required, aiming to provide a better quality of life than current solutions.
In February 2025, UroMems announced that the entire cohort of its clinical feasibility study in women had met the primary endpoints at six months, a world first. Professor Pierre Mozer, medical director and co-founder of UroMems, said: “We are delighted to have successfully treated patients who had been suffering from stress urinary incontinence for years, and to receive such positive feedback from them. The results of this study will allow us to prepare our pivotal study, which will be a major step in the development of the UroActive device.”
A fundraising structured around the pivotal clinical study
The 60 million dollars have a clear purpose: the funds will notably finance the SOPHIA2 pivotal clinical trial, conducted across 21 investigational sites in the United States. In July 2025, UroMems received IDE clearance from the FDA and the green light from the ANSM to launch this prospective multicentre trial, which will assess the safety and efficacy of the UroActive system in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence in men. The SOPHIA2 study will serve as the basis for UroMems’s regulatory submission to the FDA and will support its commercialisation strategy in the US and European markets.
Beyond the financing, Ajax Health’s entry into the capital changes the nature of the shareholder base. David Beylik and Dr Jeremy Durack are joining the UroMems board of directors. David Beylik, partner at Ajax Health, previously served as chief operating officer and founder of Maverix Medical, Ajax‘s platform. Dr Durack is a practising interventional radiologist and senior vice president of medical affairs at Ajax Health. Two complementary profiles, one operational, the other clinical, who bring exactly the expertise UroMems needs to navigate the US regulatory process.
David Beylik, partner at Ajax Health, commented: “We are delighted to finance this key stage for UroMems and to support the development of a technology that could become a new standard of care.“
A substantial and under-treated addressable market
In 2025, the global urinary incontinence market was valued at more than 3.7 billion dollars and is expected to reach 5.3 billion dollars by 2035, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.1%. These figures only capture a fraction of the real potential: urinary incontinence remains a massively under-diagnosed and under-treated condition, due to the social taboo surrounding it and the limits of current mechanical solutions.
That is precisely where the UroMems opportunity lies. Built on micromechanical technologies, the product will be able to integrate artificial intelligence in the future to improve patients’ continence in a personalised way. A scalable technology platform, protected by a substantial patent portfolio, on a market that has seen no major innovation for decades.
