Healthcare is undoubtedly one of the sectors likely to be most disrupted by the exponential development of artificial intelligence. The experts at AURIS Finance, an M&A consultancy, explain why.
From making appointments to operating theatres and pharmacy and biology services, artificial intelligence is set to transform the healthcare sector. In fact, public authorities are already addressing the issue. At the beginning of April, the French National Authority for Health (Haute Autorité de Santé) published a press release on the use of AI in healthcare. The release stressed the need to accelerate the adoption of this technology while ensuring that strict data protection measures are in place.
Prevention over cure
One area that has been opened up by the development of AI is prevention. According to an expert who spoke to the daily newspaper Les Echos, the healthcare sector is moving towards so-called ‘5P’ medicine, which stands for predictive, personalised, preventive, participative and proven. The ability of AI to make predictions, correlations and anticipations based on vast quantities of data is particularly useful in healthcare, suggesting a shift from curative to preventive medicine.
New molecules
When applied to biology, the combination of AI and quantum computing enables the processing of vast amounts of data, accelerating research significantly. AI can now screen thousands of molecules and combinations of molecules in record time. The development of new drugs, which previously took several years, can now be completed in a matter of weeks, or even days. This breakthrough heralds the rise of new molecule platforms. In France, several start-ups are leading the way, including Qubit Pharmaceuticals, Owkin and Aquemia. Aquemia specialises in AI-based drug discovery. In December 2024, Aquemia successfully completed a $38 million financing round led by a new investor: Cathay Innovation, alongside existing investors Wendel, Bpifrance Large Venture, Eurazeo and Elaia.
Strong investor appetite
According to data compiled by France Biotech, MedTech, biotech and digital health companies now account for 40% of deep tech companies in France. France has a vibrant HealthTech ecosystem comprising 2,700 companies that generate 75,600 jobs in the sector. These cutting-edge companies, which are experiencing growth in revenues, are attracting investors. In 2024, the sector raised €2.6 billion in France, marking a 47% year-on-year increase. In Europe, IPOs (Initial Public Offerings) have increased significantly in recent years and are expected to continue doing so in 2025.
