Lactalis takes over the speciality cheese division of Canada’s Agropur

Lactalis reprend la division fromages de spécialité du canadien Agropuré

Lactalis announced on 15 July 2026 the signing of an agreement to acquire the speciality cheese division of Canadian cooperative Agropur. The deal further strengthens the Laval-based group’s presence in Canada, already its third-largest market worldwide, and consolidates its leadership in the cheese segment.

The division being sold by Agropur comprises three well-known Quebec brands, Monsieur Gustav, OKA and L’Extra, along with two production sites in Oka and Saint-Hyacinthe, in Quebec. The business generates revenue of around 115 million euros, or 180 million Canadian dollars.

Around 400 employees will join Lactalis Canada once the deal closes. This headcount reflects the scale of the transfer and the French group’s intention to build on the teams already in place, rather than reconstruct an organisation from scratch on Quebec soil.

An external growth strategy in line with the group’s playbook

The acquisition is fully in line with Lactalis’s international expansion strategy. The group operates in 50 countries through 270 dairies and cheese plants worldwide, for revenue of 31.2 billion euros in 2025. For several years, the Laval-based group has been steadily stepping up external growth deals to expand its cheese brand portfolio, in France and internationally, in a dairy sector where consolidation remains a key competitiveness lever in the face of raw material cost pressure.

The approach chosen for this integration follows a method already tried and tested by the group: preserving local know-how and the Quebec identity of the acquired brands is at the heart of the announced plan. This philosophy mirrors the group’s stance in other regions, where local brands generally keep their roots and original production methods after the acquisition.

Three heritage brands to enrich the Canadian offering

The Monsieur Gustav, OKA and L’Extra brands enjoy strong recognition among Canadian consumers and are deeply associated with Quebec’s cheese heritage. Their integration allows Lactalis Canada, the group’s subsidiary with more than 4,500 employees and 19 manufacturing sites across Canada, to round out a portfolio already featuring iconic brands such as Cracker Barrel, Black Diamond and Balderson.

For Agropur, the sale of the speciality cheese division reflects the cooperative’s strategic refocus on its core dairy business. This type of deal, in which a cooperative player chooses to sell a non-core activity to an international group better positioned to develop it, remains common in a food industry where critical mass increasingly determines the ability to invest and export.

The deal is expected to close in the coming months, subject to the regulatory clearances customary in this type of cross-border transaction. It confirms the ongoing consolidation trend in the dairy sector, where international groups continue to invest in strong local brands to strengthen their regional presence.
