Assa Abloy continues its expansion and has just completed a new acquisition in Kentucky. The world leader in door opening and security solutions has announced the takeover of American company IDP, International Door Products. AURIS Finance, a consulting firm specializing in mergers and acquisitions, provides an in-depth analysis.

From small group to industry giant

The company, which specializes in the manufacture of locks, cylinders, electromechanical products, doors, and security equipment, was born in 1994. This was when two industry specialists merged: Swedish company ASSA and Finnish company ABLOY, the original inventor of the disc cylinder lock.

Industrial pioneer

At the time of the merger, Assa Abloy listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange. Over three decades, the small Northern European player has grown into an international giant, operating under numerous brands. The disc cylinder technology, patented by Abloy as early as 1919, along with the group’s expertise in high-security locks and cylinders, quickly established it as a dominant force in the secure opening market.

Rapid growth

The group, which now employs over 50,000 people, operates in 70 countries through 100 brands. With revenue reaching €13.5 billion in 2025, Assa Abloy has seen a significant increase in its earnings in recent years (+70% between 2020 and 2024). The company’s valuation has also surged, reaching €33 billion.

American acquisitions

In recent years, Assa Abloy’s development has been driven by numerous acquisitions. As part of its external growth strategy, the group completed five acquisitions in the second quarter of 2025 alone, contributing 5% to external growth, while organic growth stood at 3%. In autumn 2025, Assa Abloy acquired IDP, International Door Products, a U.S. specialist in custom hollow metal doors and frames, which generated $22 million in revenue in 2024. This is not the group’s first American acquisition; in summer 2025, Assa Abloy also took over SiteOwl, a specialist in cloud-based security systems.

Strong brands

Assa Abloy operates through around 100 brands, including well-known names like Point Fort Fichet, Vachette, Yale, and JPM, as well as niche brands targeting specific sectors. Beyond residential solutions, the group offers a wide range of products for public facilities such as hospitals, schools, and government buildings. It has also developed tailored solutions for retail, banking, airports, warehouses, storage sites, and industry.

Scaling up and high technology

As a leader in efficient door opening solutions, Assa Abloy is also a key player in identity management and automated entry systems. Since 2010, the company has accelerated the development of digital and cloud-based solutions, including identity and access management, integration with security systems (access control, intrusion detection), and solutions for smart buildings and the Internet of Things. In addition to physical products, the group now provides recurring services such as maintenance, access rights management, and software solutions.
