Schroll is joining the giant Remondis

Remondis

Remondis, a German group and global giant in the waste management sector, is continuing its strategic expansion by acquiring the Alsace-based company Schroll, which specialises in waste collection, sorting and recycling. Experts from AURIS Finance, a mergers and acquisitions consultancy, share their insights and analysis.

The deal was finalised on 30 April. German multinational Remondis acquired an 80% stake in Schroll, a company based in Alsace and founded in 1892, which specialises in household and commercial waste management. Under the terms of the agreement, the Schroll family will retain a 20% stake.

A family business

With over 800 employees and an annual waste processing capacity of more than 900,000 tonnes, Schroll is a company with strong roots in the Alsace region. The company specialises in the management of household, industrial, electronic and textile waste and operates at 21 sites across Alsace, Lorraine and the Belfort area. Its customers include businesses, individuals and local authorities, including the Eurométropole de Strasbourg. Schroll is committed to a responsible approach and aims to achieve ‘zero ultimate waste’, already recycling nearly 91% of the waste it collects. The agreement guarantees job preservation and expansion of the range of services offered to customers. Pascal and Vincent Schroll, representatives of the fourth generation, have been running the company since 2000. While Vincent Schroll will not be playing any role in the new entity resulting from Remondis’ takeover, family continuity will be ensured by Pascal Schroll and his son, Edouard, who will remain in management alongside Remondis France’s Managing Director, Philippe Girard.

A global leader

Schroll, a family-run company based in Alsace, is now joining forces with a global giant. With 46,000 employees and an annual turnover of €13.2 billion, Remondis is one of the world’s leading companies in waste management, recycling, and environmental services. The group has 900 sites in 33 countries and its services cover 30 million people and several thousand local councils and businesses. Remondis prides itself on its capacity to process 25 million tonnes of recycled materials per year, particularly in the context of the energy transition. The group develops maintenance and service solutions for heavy industries, including the steel, chemical, and energy sectors.

An offensive strategy

In recent years, Remondis has pursued an expansion strategy characterised by significant acquisitions, in line with its ambitions for sustainability and innovation. In 2020, for example, the group acquired a 5.5% stake in Semardel, a major player in waste collection and recovery in the Île-de-France region. This small acquisition nevertheless enabled Remondis to strengthen its local presence. It also reaffirmed its commitment to the circular economy. More recently, in 2025, Remondis continued to develop in the field of sustainable mobility through its parent company, Rethmann, by acquiring additional shares in Transdev, an international public transport operator.
