AB Texel France acquires Delavenne’s transport business

AB Texel

The French subsidiary of the Dutch group AB Texel has just announced the acquisition of the transport activities of Delavenne Transports, a company based in the Somme region of France, with effect from 1 December 2024. This strategic move is part of an ongoing expansion plan focusing on logistics services for the agricultural and food sectors. Here is an analysis of this development from the experts at AURIS Finance, a consultancy specialising in mergers and acquisitions.

By taking over Delavenne Transports, AB Texel France is acquiring a fleet of 24 trucks and 36 trailers. The transaction also includes the warehouse at Péronne in the Somme region, along with the group’s 27 employees. This strategic acquisition will provide AB Texel France with valuable local expertise in Hauts de France, a region of significant importance to the cereal and sugar beet industries.

Strategic realignment

For Delavenne, this sale represents an opportunity to realign its strategic direction. The group has been operating in logistics and transport from the Hauts de France region for 35 years. With this divestment, Delavenne is now concentrating its efforts on its logistics activities via its Delavenne Logistique brand, a company serving the supply chain in the agri-food, industrial, B2B and high added-value (luxury, cosmetics and tech) sectors. In addition to the storage and transfer of goods, the family business offers complementary services such as packaging, order preparation and e-commerce.

Industry concentration

For its part, the AB Texel group is continuing to expand its European network. The acquisition of Delavenne’s operations will facilitate the expansion of its network and the acquisition of a new client base in France, while optimising its fleet of specialised vehicles on a north-south route. With a fleet of 1,700 trucks and 2,950 trailers, AB Texel is one of Europe’s leading transporters of agricultural and food products. In France, the group has 80 employees and a fleet of 65 trucks and trailers.

New market conditions

This new market development is indicative of the current trend in the transport sector towards consolidation. The agri-food transport sector is facing significant challenges, primarily due to rising energy costs and increasing environmental concerns. In order to meet the expectations of increasingly demanding customers in terms of the sustainability and flexibility of their transport solutions, companies like AB Texel are stepping up their inorganic growth.

A buoyant M&A market

Against this backdrop, 2024 saw a number of mergers and acquisitions: For example, the Vosges-based haulier Mauffrey acquired Global Feed Ecotrans to gain a foothold in the Spanish market, while in the Paris region, Dimotrans took over AS team. October 2024 was a particularly dynamic month in the logistics sector with regard to mergers and acquisitions. The two mature markets of America and Europe dominated the landscape, accounting for 86% of transactions.
